Tying up the results and headlines for October, York City are there or thereabouts at the right end of league, but with as many games drawn as games won, are the Minstermen battling enough?

Of course, it’s always going to be difficult in a league of scrappers, but boss Martin Foyle knows what he wants, and isn’t afraid to speak out about his team’s shortcomings…

Visitors Stevenage took the lead against the run of play after an Andrew Drury corner was headed in by Daniel Parslow for an own-goal.

York continued to dominate and wouldn’t let up, going close with Michael Brodie, Alex Lawless and Adam Smith.

Eventually the perserverance paid off when Djoumin Sangare headed in the equaliser in stoppage-time.

York City go ten games unbeaten and give Tamworth their first home defeat of the 2009/2010 season.

Richard Tait headed the Lambs in front, but Andy Ferrell grabbed an equaliser before the break.

On the hour, Ferrell crossed for Richard Brodie to head in his tenth goal of the season, then set up Djoumin Sangare to nod in the third.

Tait claimed his second late on with another header, but the visitors had done enough.

York Manager Martin Foyle said afterwards: “Defensively we were all over the shop, it wasn’t a good enough performance for me.
“Sometimes the points can hide a multitude of sins and we need to get back on that training pitch quickly because we were a bit off the pace.”

Matthew Tubbs scores a controversial penalty to claim his fifth strike in four matches, as Salisbury City claim four wins in a row and end York City’s unbeaten run.

An edgy game was ensured when Djoumin Sangare seen to have fouled Tubbs in the area inside the first five minutes.

Richard Brodie went close twice for York, hitting the bar for one and being ruled offside for another. York City tried everything but could not break the home side down.

High-flying Oxford United needed a late equaliser to share the spoils at York.

York City looked like they were going to inflict Oxford’s second defeat of the campaign when Michael Rankine scored from Andy Ferrell’s cross after seventy minutes.

But Simon Clist drew the visitors level 10 minutes later, and immediately James Meredith was sent off for york for a second yellow card.

York’s top scorer Richard Brodie received a fifth booking of the campaign, which could mean he misses the next match against Luton.

A very happy Martin Foyle said: “The fourth official got the wrong man. It should have been Adam Smith, not Richard Brodie who was booked.
“But we’ve told the referee. He can look at it before he hands it in his report and he says he will do that, to be fair. And, if that doesn’t get rescinded, we may as well give up.
“It was a great advert for Conference football.
“They’ve only had one shot. And our two strikers got around Mark Creighton and Luke Foster, which we’d been working on.
“And I thought Michael Rankine was unplayable. He looked a league player today.”

Good news on the 20th October when the Football Association rescinded Richard Brodie’s yellow card, accepting that it was a case of mistaken identity.

Meanwhile Martin Foyle is happy with the return of former York striker Adam Boyes on a month’s loan: “A big thanks to Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe, he’s given us Adam Boyes for a month for nothing, and I know Adam will run his heart out for me and the club.”

Neil Barrett opened the scoring with his first goal for York City following a cross from Richard Brodie.

But Luton battled back, with York keeper Michael Ingham doing well to keep them out.

But Asa Hall fired in the equaliser from 20 yards out, with York almost winning with the last kick of the game but Adam Boyes put the ball wide.

Martin Foyle was upbeat with the draw: “It was a very good performance. I’m delighted with the first half, we could have been 2-0 up. We had two blatant penalties turned down – the lads were livid.
“We’ve had a hard run. We’ve got some home games coming up so there’s a chance to get some points on the board.”

York City FC FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifier Result

An unimpressed Martin Foyle was dissapointed with his squad after Michael Rankine and Richard Brodie put York City through to the FA Cup first round proper.

He said after the match: “There was quite a few disappointing performances today but as I said after the game the object was just to get into round one.
“I’m not making excuses. I didn’t think we were sharp enough, quick enough.”
“There were a lot of things that weren’t right.
“It’s a wake-up call but again we’re unbeaten at home and we’re into the next round.”

Foyle said he wants York to go on a run in the FA Cup and he is ready to take on whoever they are drawn against.

On 25th October York were drawn against Crewe at home in the first round of the FA Cup. The game will be played on Saturday 7th November.

York City FC’s next game is on Saturday 31st October, against Crawley Town at Broadfield Stadium.

York City FC September 2009 News and Results Round-Up

York City Football Club end September 2009 on the up, still unbeaten at KitKat Crescent, and with Michael Gash and Richard Brodie on target on a regular basis!

Here is the end of the month round-up.

Still in the chase for play-offs and promotion, a squad shuffle in September saw City’s midfielder Simon Russell (on 17th September) and defender Alan O’Hare (on 1st October) go out on month-long loans to Tamworth and Gainsborough Trinity respectively.

Russell joined York last summer, but has not played so far this season; O’Hare has been on the bench eight times this season, but has yet to play for the City’s first team.

Coming in on the 29th September, also for a one-month loan, is Oxford United defender Chris Carruthers who has just completed another loan spell at Crawley.

Carruthers cannot play against Oxford in October, but is allowed to play in the FA Cup for York.

Michael Gash nets two for York City to clinch a home point and keep up an unbeaten run at home.

Gash first scored just after half an hour from close-range, but two goals in five minutes late into the second half from Jai Reason and Mark Beesley looked to give an in-form Cambridge an away victory.

However, Gash scored in the 89th minute with his head to save the home team’s blushes.

The result means York are now unbeaten at home so far this season, whilst visitors Cambridge have now gone 8 games unbeaten although have drawn 5 in that run.

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle praised his team’s character to BBC Radio York.

It’s seven home wins from seven, as York City Football Club take all three points against a battling ten-man Kidderminster.

Kidderminster Harriers opened the scoring in only the second minute from a Brian Smikle header, but York were level on ten minutes with a penalty from Richard Brodie, as the visitors’ Gavin Caines was sent off for the foul.

Brodie headed his second to take York City into the break ahead, and Michael Gash added a third by the hour mark.

Matt Barnes-Homer scored a consolation goal from long-range immediately afterwards, but York had done enough.

In-form York striker Richard Brodie scored his fifth goal of the season, to make it three wins in a row for City.

Brodie was fouled just five minutes into the match by Dominic Collins in the penalty area, with the striker converting the resulting spot-kick.

Soon after, Brodie turned provider for Michael Gash, whose close-range shot clinched York’s second.

Visitors Eddie Hutchinson and Kieran Djilali went close for Crawley Town, while York had a number of chances to increase their lead.

In the end, the two first-half strikes were enough for maximum points again.

Manager Martin Foyle told BBC Radio York he had “No complaints” about the victory.

Barrow AFC 0 – 0 York City

Home side Barrow got over their last match’s 6-1 home defeat by Rushden to deny York a fourth straight win.

Goalkeeper Tim Deasy kept the Bluebirds from going behind at the start, stopping Neil Barrett’s shot for York. The home team then knuckled down to earn a deserved point.

York City kept up the pressure, with Michael Gash’s header tipped over by Deasy also in the first half.

Barrow may have nicked it, but Jason Walker’s header was denied by the bar.

Overall, boss Martin Foyle saw the away draw as point gained, he told BBC Radio York.

A second-half brace sees Richard Brodie’s tally reach seven for the season as York City climb to the play-off places.

The home win means York FC leapfrog Kettering Town, in an energetic display from the Minstermen.

City started well with both Brodie and Michael Gash forcing Kettering keeper Lee Harper to make saves inside the first minute.

Just before the hour mark, a ball from Djoumin Sangare was met by Brodie to put the home side deservedly ahead. Twelve minutes later, another ball in from Sangare was headed into the net for Brodie’s second and three points for York.

A proud Martin Foyle spoke to BBC Radio York.

14th September 2009, the Blue Square Premier match between Luton Town FC and York City has been rescheduled to 20th October.

Originally the game had been due on 19 September, but was postponed at the request of Bedfordshire Police because of a march planned by the English Defence League in Luton on the same Saturday.

The reschedule deatils are: Tuesday 20 October kick-off 19:45

York FC’s next game is on Tuesday 22 September, against Cambridge United at KitKat Crescent, kick-off 19:45.

Richard Brodie struck twice, as York City go three league games unbeaten.

Brodie almost put the Minstermen up within three minutes but Joe Welch parried his shot, however he found the target on twelve minutes, heading in a cross from Ben Purkiss.

York went two up by the hour mark with Adam Smith’s right-footed goal, before Brodie pretty much sealed the win by converting a penalty after Craig Pope fouled him.

Danny Wright claimed a last minute consolation from Gareth Gwillim’s cross.

A happy York City manager Martin Foyle told BBC York they kept it simple and direct.

Luton Town v York City Match Postponed

2nd September, and Luton Town have cancelled their home game against York City on police advice.The match against York was due to take place at Kenilworth Road on 19th September, and will be rescheduled at a later date.

York FC’s next game is on Saturday 5th September, against Crawley Town at KitKat Crescent.

The Press – Histon Match Report

Luton Town Football Club has taken the decision because a protest march is planned in the town on the same day by The English Defence League.

The group is banned from marching in Luton, and Bedfordshire Police advised Luton FC to cancel as the force cannot polioce both events.

A statement on the club’s website said a new date has yet to be finalised and apologised to fans for any inconvenience.

A Richard Pacquette late header left Hayes & Yeading still waiting for their first win of the season.

Rob Gradwell had gone close for Hayes, and City’s Daniel Parslow was denied by a fine save from Simon Overland.

George Daly scored from the penalty spot after being felled by Michael Ingham, and it was with only six minutes to go that Pacquette scored the equaliser from Adam Smith’s cross to share the points.

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle was very unhappy with what he saw as a below-par performance:

“That was a very very poor team performance, it looked like 11 individual players out there.
“I can’t accept that, they can’t accept that.

“It was a five-hour journey down here, and it looked like all eleven were still on the bus at half-time.”

York City striker Richard Pacquette spoke on Monday 24th August, saying that he was hoping for a start against Gateshead following his debut goal at Hayes & Yeading United at the weekend. His late header rescued a point in a scrappy 1 – 1 draw.

“Hopefully I will be pushing for a start. I will keep knocking on the door.”

It was a ‘game of two halves’ at the International Stadium, with home side Gateshead FC controlling most of the game in the opening 45 minutes, which saw York’s defender David McGurk substituted after the 15-minute mark with a suspected leg injury and Gateshead’s Carl Jones substituted before the half-hour.

York City went in at half-time behind to an Alex Francis shot that went in in first-half injury time. But Richard Brodie equalised just ten minutes after the restart, before Saturday’s goal-scorer Richard Pacquette was sent off barely a minute later.

This meant York FC played with 10 men for the final half hour, with big-money signing Michael Gash heading an Andy Ferrell cross to record the Minstermen’s first away win of the season.

Both York City and visitors Rushden and Diamonds are still waiting for their first wins of the season.

Last night’s game was something of a shot-shy affair, although for York ‘keeper Michael Ingham was the most likely man-of-the-match for the Minstermen.

Michael Rankine had a first-half goal disallowed, York City FC’s only shot on target before the break.

City manager Martin Foyle told the BBC that although he was happy to get York’s first point of the season, he felt that the overall performance was not good enough.

City’s recent big money signing Michael Gash started on the bench, replacing Michael Rankine on 69 minutes.
In all, six of the starting eleven were from this summer’s signings.

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle told the BBC: “I thought we were excellent… There wasn’t a player out there who was below par and I’m absolutely devasted for them.”
