York City Football Club end September 2009 on the up, still unbeaten at KitKat Crescent, and with Michael Gash and Richard Brodie on target on a regular basis!

Here is the end of the month round-up.

Still in the chase for play-offs and promotion, a squad shuffle in September saw City’s midfielder Simon Russell (on 17th September) and defender Alan O’Hare (on 1st October) go out on month-long loans to Tamworth and Gainsborough Trinity respectively.

Russell joined York last summer, but has not played so far this season; O’Hare has been on the bench eight times this season, but has yet to play for the City’s first team.

Coming in on the 29th September, also for a one-month loan, is Oxford United defender Chris Carruthers who has just completed another loan spell at Crawley.

Carruthers cannot play against Oxford in October, but is allowed to play in the FA Cup for York.

Michael Gash nets two for York City to clinch a home point and keep up an unbeaten run at home.

Gash first scored just after half an hour from close-range, but two goals in five minutes late into the second half from Jai Reason and Mark Beesley looked to give an in-form Cambridge an away victory.

However, Gash scored in the 89th minute with his head to save the home team’s blushes.

The result means York are now unbeaten at home so far this season, whilst visitors Cambridge have now gone 8 games unbeaten although have drawn 5 in that run.

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle praised his team’s character to BBC Radio York.

It’s seven home wins from seven, as York City Football Club take all three points against a battling ten-man Kidderminster.

Kidderminster Harriers opened the scoring in only the second minute from a Brian Smikle header, but York were level on ten minutes with a penalty from Richard Brodie, as the visitors’ Gavin Caines was sent off for the foul.

Brodie headed his second to take York City into the break ahead, and Michael Gash added a third by the hour mark.

Matt Barnes-Homer scored a consolation goal from long-range immediately afterwards, but York had done enough.

York City FC 2 – 0 Crawley Town

In-form York striker Richard Brodie scored his fifth goal of the season, to make it three wins in a row for City.

Brodie was fouled just five minutes into the match by Dominic Collins in the penalty area, with the striker converting the resulting spot-kick.

Soon after, Brodie turned provider for Michael Gash, whose close-range shot clinched York’s second.

Visitors Eddie Hutchinson and Kieran Djilali went close for Crawley Town, while York had a number of chances to increase their lead.

In the end, the two first-half strikes were enough for maximum points again.

Manager Martin Foyle told BBC Radio York he had “No complaints” about the victory.

Barrow AFC 0 – 0 York City

Home side Barrow got over their last match’s 6-1 home defeat by Rushden to deny York a fourth straight win.

Goalkeeper Tim Deasy kept the Bluebirds from going behind at the start, stopping Neil Barrett’s shot for York. The home team then knuckled down to earn a deserved point.

York City kept up the pressure, with Michael Gash’s header tipped over by Deasy also in the first half.

Barrow may have nicked it, but Jason Walker’s header was denied by the bar.

Overall, boss Martin Foyle saw the away draw as point gained, he told BBC Radio York.

A second-half brace sees Richard Brodie’s tally reach seven for the season as York City climb to the play-off places.

The home win means York FC leapfrog Kettering Town, in an energetic display from the Minstermen.

City started well with both Brodie and Michael Gash forcing Kettering keeper Lee Harper to make saves inside the first minute.

Just before the hour mark, a ball from Djoumin Sangare was met by Brodie to put the home side deservedly ahead. Twelve minutes later, another ball in from Sangare was headed into the net for Brodie’s second and three points for York.

A proud Martin Foyle spoke to BBC Radio York.

14th September 2009, the Blue Square Premier match between Luton Town FC and York City has been rescheduled to 20th October.

Originally the game had been due on 19 September, but was postponed at the request of Bedfordshire Police because of a march planned by the English Defence League in Luton on the same Saturday.

The reschedule deatils are: Tuesday 20 October kick-off 19:45

York FC’s next game is on Tuesday 22 September, against Cambridge United at KitKat Crescent, kick-off 19:45.

York Events: Food and Drink Festival September 2009

Food, Fun and Raising Funds at York Food and Drink Festival 18 – 27 September 2009

The York Food and Drink Festival is focussing this year on great Yorkshire Food and Drink.

Visitors to this year’s Festival will find day time free entry in Parliament Street to markets, a demonstration area, beer tent and information point; there is also a full programme of day and evening events in York Guildhall, Manson House and other venues across the city of York.

The Festival is run by an independent ‘not for profit’ organisation.

This year, the York Food & Drink Festival is launching their Fountain Cafe Events. Looking to put the fun into fundraising with foodies, connoisseurs, real ale fans and more all coming together at The Fountain Cafe – a new and unique venue that is being offered to local charities, groups and societies both in York and around the city, so that they may hold themed events to raise fundraising capital.

The Fountain Cafe holds up to 140 people, and will be situated inside a huge marquee placed over the fountain in Parliament Street in York. From 18 September to the 27 September 2009, fundraising events will be held in the evening throughout this year’s York Food & Drink Festival.

There will be a fully licensed Festival bar at the cafe, which means visitors will be offered a range of lagers, real ales from hand-pumps as well as chilled wines.

Charity Events Planned for York Food Festival 2009

For seven nights of this year’s Festival, the Fountain Cafe will be host to the following events from local groups, societies and charities:

A Meal for Darfur, with the Mount School, raising funds for the Aegis Trust: an organization campaigning to put a stop to genocide.

Film Festival at National Railway Museum York

The National Railway Museum in York is showing a series of train-related movies through September and October 2009.

The aptly named Rails & Reels Season celebrates the influence of the railways on film-makers and film-making from black-and-white silents from 1895 all the way through to the present day.

Each weekend, families in York are invited to enjoy a day out of activities and films as the NRM hosts a series of free film screenings with such classics as Murder On The Orient Express, The Ghost Train and The Ladykillers.

There will also be screenings of archive footage, some of it unseen, and rare British Transport Films.

As well as these free events the museum has two very special events.

Trainspotting

The NRM will be hosting its first-ever Drive In Movie! with a special screening of the Ewan McGregor movie Trainspotting!

The cult hit from the creators of Shallow Grave, Sunshine, Millions and Slumdog Millionaire, recieved huge critical acclaim in 1996, and made international stars of its lead actors, including Robert Carlyle, Johnny Lee Miller and Kelly Macdonald. At the time, it was the highest-grossing British film, second only to Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The British Film Institute (BFI) voted Trainspotting 10th in its list of the Top 100 British Films Of All Time.

Current industry rumours abound that the film-makers and stars will be producing a sequel, based on author Irving Welsh’s follow-up book.

Tickets to this gritty, exciting film are currently available and cost £10 per car. The price rises to £15 on the night.

Trainspotting is being shown on 17th September 2009, and is a certificate 18 film.

Brief Encounter

Another special event in the Rails & Reels Season is a unique one-off screening of the Noel Coward classic Brief Encounter.

This 1945 film starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, and directed by David Lean, is being shown in the Great Hall on the 19th September 2009.

An unforgettable movie, the Brief Encounter evening will involve the showing of the film followed by a fantastic four course dinner in the period setting of the Station Hall.

There will be a 1940′s style band in attendance, building up to an unforgettably romantic evening.

Brief Encounter is a PG certificate film.

Cycling Tour Of Britain comes to York

The 2009 Tour of Britain will end its first stage in the City of York on Saturday, 12th September.

York previously held a finish in 1998, so is no stranger to the Tour.

Keen cyclists and cycling fans will be happy to descend on the City of York on Saturday afternoon, as York is one of only 12 cities in the United Kingdom that has a ‘Cycling City Status’ – other holders include Brighton, Cambridge and Chester – awarded to cities who actively promote fitness and well-being through cycling, as well as constructing a proper infrastructure of cylepaths and lanes to make for a healthy alternative to using the car.

Improvements have been made in recent times to York’s cycle lane network, both on- and off- road, making a tour of the City easily done by bicycle.

Tour of Britain Stage One

The Yorkshire and Humber stage of the race covers 172 kilometres in about four hours.

Starting in Scunthorpe at 10:15, the first stage of the 2009 Tour of Britain is a somewhat gentle beginning to the eight-stage event, which eventually takes the riders almost 1200 miles around Britain.

The flat roads of this Saturday’s stage will make for some good racing, with three seperate sprint points at Forest Pines, Pocklington and Wetwang.

The professional competitors completing the course are expected to cross the finishing line at around 14:15, on Malton Road in York.

Monk Stray

A family fun day of activities and events is being held at Monk Stray in York to tie in with the Tour of Britain ending its opening stage in the City of York.

All ages young and old are invited to participate in the free day out

You will find cycling stands from local York cycling organisations as well as local sports retailers.

Cycling themed activities include organised cycle rides and cycling maintenance workshops, as well as fancy dress (for everybody) and fancy wheels (for everybody’s bicycle!) competitions.

There will also be bouncy castles and wall climbing, as well as other play equipment, and a samba band will be playing at 13:00 and 14:00!

The Monk Stray activities and events run from 10:00 to 17:00.

How to get to Monk Stray

By Car: Parking will be available on the Stray, access on Stockton Lane, Woodlands Grove into Straylands Grove.

By Bus: Buses from York city centre run frequently to Monk Stray, look for services to Monk Stray (Elm Park) or to Stockton Lane.

By Bicycle: Secure parking will be available for cyclists on Monk Stray on the day, donations to Help for Heroes will be gratefully received.

Situated on the outskirts of York, the Yorkshire Air Museum is a must see for all history buffs, air enthusiasts or just a family wanting an interesting and enjoyable day out.

The Yorkshire Air Museum has been carefully created to represent an authentic World War Two Bomber Command Station. This station comes complete with an original World War Two control tower, prototypes of Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb and full history of the RAF Bomber Command put together to create a wonderful exhibition.

The museum is a sprawling metropolis of World War Two RAF memorabilia and comes fully equipped with a hanger containing the rebuilt Halifax Bomber; called “Friday the 13th.

Parked around the site and located in the Romney building are many lovingly restored World War Two vehicles of all types. If you’re lucky you may actually see old tractors and other vehicles pulling aircraft across the complex.

For those that want to be a bit ‘hands on’ why not visit the Handley Page Aircraft Workshop. This is a real maintenance workshop where you can see engineers at work on the aircraft.

You can explore the ‘Airborne Forces’ and ‘no. 609 Squadron Display’ to find out all about the airborne forces of World War Two and see a replica full size Spitfire on display.

Just across the way from the ‘Airborne Forces’ and ‘no. 609 Squadron Display’ is the ‘Uniforms and Air Gunners Display’ where you can immerse yourself in the clothing of all UK forces during World War Two. The ‘Air Gunners Display’ also has six gun turrets from the era which are a must to see.

On top of other great exhibitions and displays at the Yorkshire Air Museum there is also a great souvenir shop, aviation gallery and a NAAFI (Navy, Army, Air Force Insitute) restaurant; where you can buy cold drinks and snacks.

How to get to the Yorkshire Air Museum

To get to the Yorkshire Air Museum from Leeds take the inner ring road out of the city onto the A64, continue on the A64 before turning left on to the A6120. After a short drive turn right back onto the A64 continuing for 21.5 miles in total.

At the end of your journey you will come to a roundabout where you take the last exit on to the B1228 Elvington Lane, Halifax Way is located 2.5 miles down on the right hand side.

Richard Brodie struck twice, as York City go three league games unbeaten.

Brodie almost put the Minstermen up within three minutes but Joe Welch parried his shot, however he found the target on twelve minutes, heading in a cross from Ben Purkiss.

York went two up by the hour mark with Adam Smith’s right-footed goal, before Brodie pretty much sealed the win by converting a penalty after Craig Pope fouled him.

Danny Wright claimed a last minute consolation from Gareth Gwillim’s cross.

A happy York City manager Martin Foyle told BBC York they kept it simple and direct.

Luton Town v York City Match Postponed

2nd September, and Luton Town have cancelled their home game against York City on police advice.The match against York was due to take place at Kenilworth Road on 19th September, and will be rescheduled at a later date.

York FC’s next game is on Saturday 5th September, against Crawley Town at KitKat Crescent.

The Press – Histon Match Report

Luton Town Football Club has taken the decision because a protest march is planned in the town on the same day by The English Defence League.

The group is banned from marching in Luton, and Bedfordshire Police advised Luton FC to cancel as the force cannot polioce both events.

A statement on the club’s website said a new date has yet to be finalised and apologised to fans for any inconvenience.
