Commonwealth Day: A Story and Tradition

 

Commonwealth Day 2010


Commonwealth Day is held on the second Monday in March, and is celebrated in the association of countries (that was formerly part of the British Empire) that now makes up the Commonwealth of Nations.

Today the Commonwealth comprises 53 independent states, including 32 republics, 16 constitutional monarchies that recognise the British monarch as their Head of State, and five monarchies (Brunei, Darussalam, Malaysia, Swaziland, Tonga and Lesotho). International Women’s Day, March 8th 2010

 

International Women’s Day 2010

In 2009, with the theme Women and Men United to End Violence Against Women and Girls, International Women’s Day (IWD) inspired new heights of success with 984 events organised over 64 countries. Thousands of women of all races took part.

Every year organisations involved select a different theme that reflects global and local gender issues: this year in 2010, the theme is Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All – although individual countries or groups are encouraged to choose their own theme if preferred. A History of St David and St David’s Day

 

Saint David’s Day, National Day of Wales


The only day in the year when you can wear a leek in your buttonhole, Saint David’s Day falls on 1st March and marks the death on 1st March 589 of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales.

The feast day dates back to 1120 and was declared a national day of celebration in the 18th century; today St. David’s Day is marked by parades, recitals, displays and concerts - eisteddfodau – as part of an attempt to raise the international perception of Wales as a cultural centre, much in the same way that Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day has become famous all over the world.
