Fudies: Urban Food Store

Fudies classes itself as an urban food store and sells all manner of food stuffs to back up this claim.

In one trip to Fudies you can leave with Zebra, Ostrich, Camel and Crocodile in the bag and still you wouldn’t have tried the majority of exotic food on offer!

Restaurant Review – Home from Home at Saffron Desi

A visit to Saffron Desi in York is rather like visiting a family.

From the moment you walk in you’re greeted with genuine enthusiasm by staff who are pleased to see you: once inside, a roomy bar area leads into the lively restaurant where the music is played just loud enough to generate a buzz, but not too loud to prohibit intimate conversation.

Waiters share a joke with families as they wheel out monster sized Naan breads that are larger than some of the younger clientele. Groups of revellers are accommodated in the spacious rear of the restaurant while couples, business people and old age pensioners can view the historic streets of Micklegate from the front.

The restaurant encapsulates one of the great things about Indian curry houses in general – it appeals to everyone across the board whatever age, nationality or class, and it is a place where people feel comfortable.

Saffron Desi’s sister restaurant in Bradford has been well known for a long time, but the York outlet opened just four years ago: already it has a huge customer base numbering amongst its fans none other than the future heir to the throne, Prince William, who chose the restaurant for a royal celebration in 2008.

For owner Mohammed Nisar the reason for its success is easy to explain: “The answer is in the name,” he says, “Saffron is a spice and Desi means homeland.
“People feel at home here. We are bringing traditional Pakistani food to York and it’s just a little bit different from other restaurants.”

And Saffron Desi is a bit special: situated just a stone’s throw from Micklegate Church in an area full of traditional and cosmopolitan restaurants, its contemporary decor provides an interesting contrast to the surrounding Roman walls and ancient Micklegate Bar (the entrance to the old city); the menu also offers something out of the ordinary with delicacies like lambs’ brains, fresh quail and, somewhat of a rarity in these parts – paneer dishes including Paneer Pahora – soft goats’ cheese with herbs and spices coated in flour and deep fried.

Prices for entrees ranged from a very reasonable £2.25 to £5.95; an incentive not to skip on preliminaries, especially since main courses average £6.95 to £8.50, with King Prawn dishes ranging from £11.95 to £12.95.

These included a full range of curries, Balti specialities, Tandoori and Biryani dishes with plenty on offer for those with a more adventurous palate, including Paya or lambs’ trotters – I didn’t even know lambs had trotters!

I decided to follow in Prince William’s footsteps and ordered the Royal Delight, a dish created for Princess Diana by the chef of Saffron Desi’s sister restaurant - Parvez Akthar – at a charity function at the Dorchester Hotel. It comprised of diced chicken breast marinated with yoghurt, spices and masalla sauce cooked with tomatoes, ginger, onions, spices and double cream and topped with cashew nuts and fried onion. It was delicious and probably the spiciest dish I’ve had for a while. My partner’s marinated lamb chops were also sumptuous.

We were entertained throughout by waiters Kali and Haida who provided comic relief and wisecracks in between courses, the latter to such an extent that we queried if Prince William had asked for his autograph on his visit!

We polished off the meal with sweets from the range of beautifully presented Asian and American desserts, including Gulab Jamon and Chocolate Fudge and staggered home feeling that it wasn’t only the food that had contributed to our feeling of wellbeing.

There’s one thing customers can be sure of receiving at Saffron Desi and that’s a right royal welcome –
whether you happen to be Prince William or not.

The chicken livers proved to be a succulent choice in my case, whilst my partner’s Machli Masala – haddock chunks marinated in Masalla sauce – was a refreshing change from the ubiquitous onion bhaji (although I’m sure that was on the menu too).

Mr Nasir himself provides a distinguished and proactive presence in the restaurant, greeting and helping to serve diners, ably assisted by manager Mohammed Rafiq.

I want comics in York!

  
I write for the web, and spend far too much time searching out the minutiae of websites and publishing: this makes me a nerd, of sorts.
 
But I’m also a big fan of comic books, graphic novels, words-and-pictures… this makes me a GEEK.
 
But on the back of Batman and Superman movies, Transformers 2 and Terminator toys, Heroes and True Blood on the television, Jonathon Ross to write a comic – the geeks are inheriting the earth.
 
I’m sorry, but when a story involving Disney purchasing Marvel in a 4billion dollar deal is front page business news in every paper and website I look at, then I’m allowed to get excited.
 
As a geek discovering the city of York, I obviously did that most important of searches: the local search for comics and comic shops. Imagine my dismay when, at first, the search engines were taking me far, far from York and North Yorkshire, and pointing me inland to Leeds and Wakefield, or further still to Hull!
 
No self –respecting penny-pinching collector wants to waste hard-earned cash traipsing over the countryside, not in this (best BBC News voice) Current Financial Climate. So I persevered, a day trip to Leeds being an adventure for another day.
 
The first shop which, to me, seems approachable (although still a trip of 20miles) is

Definitely covers the all important trinity of New Releases (monthly floppies), Graphic Novels (or trade paperbacks) and Back Issues (the Holy Grail for collecting – or is that just mixing metaphors?). They sell comic sets by storyline and character from most of the top publishers, as well as comic supplies and grading services, and the all-important subscription service.
 
Good, a small business that shows that they know their stuff. But surely there’s something closer to York city, something YO1?
 
I don’t necessarily want a WHSmiths bookshop, which has too much varied content to be of any particular use to me, or Waterstones that, admittedly, has a great range of Manga (with Tokyopop digests and the like in good old-fashioned spinner racks) as well as a revolving selection of aforementioned graphic novels: but my needs aren’t only for spines on my bookshelves, I want to find floppy four-colour comics, 22pages of escapism, week-in and week-out, t-shirts with my favourite characters on them(Captain America, this week), games and collectibles… dare I say toys?
 
And, please, somewhere in the YO1 postcode… waitaminute: ta-dah!

Travelling Man has stores across the midlands and the north of England, with sites in Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle Upon Tyne as well as York.
 
Travelling Man York, although small, gets it’s Wednesday Comics every Thursday (geek joke, sorry)has a wide selection of manga, big names DC/Marvel, indies such as Dark Horse, Image, Ariel (ahem!) games, models and toys.

They have 3-for-2 deals on some products, comics supplies (bags and boards and boxes), as well as t-shirts with my favourite characters on them (Green Lantern, this sentence).
 
All the latest tpbs and OGNs, and importantly the chance to create a pull list for your weekly or monthly needs. 
 
And they have a neat Adi Granov (Iron Man) graphic on their website, too.
 
As with most smaller businesses, one great plus-point for Travelling Man is the knowledge and enthusiasm that the staff members have for the products they sell. If you are looking for a specific title that they no longer have in stock, then they are willing and able to order it for you, and they always hold a number of small press self-published (and self-stapled) ashcan comics.
 
I have used Travelling Man in other cities, when looking for a fix to break up a long day of sightseeing or shopping, and have always found the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, and there’s always someone willing to help out with any questions, or even just to shoot the breeze comics-wise with.
 
I see that latest news on their site is the announcement for their own mini comic-con, which is all good and another reason to give Travelling Man my recommendation!
