Armed Forces Day was instituted to replace Veteran’s Day, observed since 2006.
The date of 27th June was chosen as the day after the anniversary of the first investiture ceremony for the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria, held in Hyde Park on 26th June 1857.
A special flag based on the Union Jack was designed by the government for the occasion which is organised by councils and businesses.
The most interesting thing about St Swithin’s life in fact came after his death.
Because he believed himself unworthy to be buried in a church, he issued posthumous orders that his body be buried outside in a “vile” place where “it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and to the raindrops pouring from on high”.
And so he was duly buried outside the west door of the Old Minster at Winchester.

Deaf Awareness Week 2010 – 28th June to 4th July 2010

The theme aims to highlight the different types of deafness and explain the many different methods of communication used by deaf people.

Above all, International Firefighters’ Day is a day when people across the world can unite in respect and support for the Firefighters. For as the founder, Lt JJ Edmondson says, “In the fire service, we fight together against one common enemy – fire – no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak.” Continue reading Be Aware: International Firefighters’ Day | Tuesday May 4th 2010
In 1970, a grassroots movement was gaining momentum across the country, as groups of students and workers united in an attempt to alert the government to the idea that voters were concerned about ecological matters. The result was Earth Day, first celebrated in America on the 22nd April 1970 and founded by the US Senator Gaylord Nelson to “shake up the political establishment and force this issue on to the national agenda.”
