The Yorkshire Foundation

The Yorkshire Foundation is dedicated to serving the county with community and education initiatives, and operates as a registered charity with HRH The Duke of York as its Patron.

There are more than 60 Community Foundations operating in the voluntary sector throughout the UK and were established to cover specific geographical areas: they work towards supporting local communities, providing amenities that benefit the local area and promoting charitable works; many are involved in grant-making activities and award grants of up to a total £70m per annum.

The Yorkshire Foundation’s special remit is to promote the county of Yorkshire and aid inhabitants who are suffering financial hardship or who are socially and economically disadvantaged, bringing them together with local authorities and voluntary or other organisations to help them find relief.

One of the Foundation’s main purposes is to advance education in Yorkshire and the UK, and to act as a bridge to enable people to participate the community life. The Yorkshire Foundation also exists to promote urban and rural regeneration in socially deprived areas by the relief of unemployment and promotion of business opportunities. Public amenities are maintained and improved, working towards the preservation of local buildings, sites of historical importance or archaeological significance. Conservation is another key factor, with the protection of the environment being a main priority.

In order to promote and fund work, the Foundation teams up with sponsors to arrange events: previous sponsors in 2009 have included the communications group Cicada, the David Thompson Charitable Trust and digyorkshire; sponsors are featured in publicity articles of events covered by the local media, with complimentary tickets to concerts and promotional advertisements included in programmes.

A successful fund-raising event organised by The Yorkshire Foundation took place in October 2009 when a Yorkshire Celebration was performed in the magnificent setting of York Minster, featuring acapella performers The Kings Singers with the Yorkshire born bass singer Stephen Connolly, the world-famous Brighouse & Rastrick Band and David Childs – reputed to be the world’s finest euphonium player. The Radio 2 presenter Frank Renton hosted events to raise money for the valuable work of the charity.

Association of Voluntary Guides to the City of York

This free walking tour of York commences at 10.15am from outside the City Art Gallery in Exhibition Square.

During the summer months an additional tour takes place in the afternoon at 2.15pm from 1st April to 30th October, and a further tour at 6.45pm from June to August. There’s no need to book – tours depart promptly from outside the Art Gallery in Exhibition Square.

For two hours history is brought to life as you take a gentle stroll around Roman York’s city walls, medieval streets and churches.

The visit incorporates the Roman Multangular Tower, St Mary’s Abbey, Kings Manor, Bootham Bar, the magnificent York Minster, Treasurer’s House, Trinity Church with its famous ‘box’ pews and the Shrine of Saint Margaret Clitherow.

All the Association’s tours are extremely informative and conducted by a specially trained guide. Even better, they’re FREE – so you can save your money to buy tea and buns from Betty’s Tearooms later.

And of course no tour would be complete without a visit to the incomparably narrow thoroughfares of The Shambles, where it’s possible for someone in one upstairs window to lean out and shake hands across the street with the person opposite!

“I travelled to Harrogate to photograph Jo, Nick and little Edward, (and not forgetting their gorgeous and very shy dog!) We had a lovely day, shooting a huge variety of images in and around the home. Finishing off the day with a walk through the beautiful autumn leaves in the nearby park.

Jo and Nick are absolutely lovely and made me feel so welcome in their home, Edward was also a little star, really patient , cute and cuddly.

I can’t wait to show the Nick & Jo the images, I have so many that I am thrilled with. Here are just a few of my favourites ….”

Ssssssh! Bookworms Unite – York Libraries and Library Services

The city of York has worked hard to build up a library network that rivals any other location in the British Isles.

Not only do the libraries in York supply the expected range of books on a variety of subjects, they also provide a large collection of services for the good of the community.

In total there are fourteen libraries in locations throughout York. Here we list a few of the better known ones.

York Central Library

York Central Library is York’s main library and is located in the centre of the city amongst the historical buildings.

The Central Library is a huge resource, housing everything from computers for internet access and to books, DVD’s and CD’s.

The library is due to be closed at the end of October 2009 for the Winter, and will reopen in the Spring of 2010 as it is being refurbished into an Explore centre to offer even more to the people of York.

Explore: Acomb Library Learning Centre

The Explore: Acomb Library Learning Centre is an award winning library, how many libraries can say this!

This library is special because it offers so much more than a run-of-the-mill library.

Besides the (now commonplace) computers, internet, books, CD’s, DVD’s and study areas, The Explore: Acomb also offers Computer courses from beginner to advanced, Short taster sessions in a variety of computer skills, Language classes in a variety of European languages, Alternative therapy classes, Yoga, Pilates and much more.

Explore: New Earswick Library Learning Centre

Another great library, the Explore: New Earswick Children’s Centre is the second (so far) of the city of York’s special Explore libraries offering a great range of facilities.

The New Earswick library has books, broadband internet, computers, DVD’s, local information, local history and family genealogy, newspapers, Computer courses from beginner to advanced and Short taster sessions in a variety of computer skills.

Recycling in York is an important and integral part of city life. With the environment being high on the agenda for many people, the city of York is trying to ensure a bright future by providing recycling centres for all types of products.

Here we list a selection of Recycling Centres available in the York area.

Beckfield Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre

Beckfield Lane Recycling Centre recycles everything from textiles and paper to scrap metal and batteries; they even have a section for garden waste.

Beckfield also accept fridges and freezers for recycling.

10.00am – 2.00pm Saturday and Sunday

Hazel Court Household Waste Recycling Centre

The Hazel Court Household Waste Recycling Centre is a huge recycling depot where you can take waste of all types for recycling.

The Hazel Court Centre even recycles CD’s, DVD’s, electrical equipment, fluorescent tubes and mobile phones on top of the usual paper, cardboard, batteries and garden waste.

You can take asbestos to the Hazel Court Household Waste Recycling Centre; if you plan on taking asbestos make sure it is double wrapped in strong plastic and ask for assistance from the site attendant on arrival.

Fridges and freezers can also be deposited at Hazel Court.

8.30am – 7.00pm Monday to Saturday and 8.30am – 4.00pm Sunday, April to September.
8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 8.30am – 4.00pm Sunday, October to March.

Towthorpe/Strensall Household Waste Recycling Centre

The Towthorpe/Strensall Centre is larger than Beckfield Lane but not quite as big as Hazel Court.

Towthorpe/Strensall Household Waste Recycling Centre recycles paper, cans, shoes, textiles, car oil, fluorescent tubes, plastic bottles, metal and garden waste among other items.

Fridges and freezers can be deposited at Towthorpe/Strensall recycling centre.

8.30am – 5.00pm daily, March.
8.30am – 7.00pm April to September.
8.30am – 5.00pm October.
8.30am – 4.00pm November to February.

York has a great many Adult Learning Centres supporting those over the age of eighteen who wish to partake in further education.

With many different colleges and education centres offering a huge array of courses, it is not hard to see why the Adult Learning Centres in the city of York receive a large number of requests from adults in the area wishing to learn every year.
