See Historic York with an Open Top Bus Tour
If you’re short of time or with young children or are simply tired of walking, what better way to see the city of York than from the top of an Open Top Bus?
The service, which is a family run business, works on a hop-on and hop-off basis from 9.08am in autumn and 9.20am in winter, running every 15 to 20 minutes (with no buses operating between 21st December and 8th January).
Travelling in a full circle around York City centre, the bus journeys via Exhibition Square, Gillygate, Monk Bar, Sainsbury’s, Peasholme Green, Stonebow, Cliffords Tower, Margaret Street, Walmgate Bar, Fawcett Street, Fishergate, Nunnery Lane, Railway Station, Memorial Gardens and Museum Gardens – a full timetable and map are available from Visitor Information Centres.
Tickets can be bought from the visitor centre at York Railway Station, and Exhibition Square, from the booking office, or can be purchased on the bus at any departure point.

Once on board, there’s a full informative commentary with historical details about famous landmarks and the drivers are knowledgeable and experienced. With 16 stops all the major attractions are covered, including The Shambles, Cliffords Tower and York Minster.
Although the vehicles are open top, most have a covered front so it’s possible to enjoy the tour whatever the weather. The staff are very helpful too and tickets are valid for 24 or 48 hours.
