Otherworld – York’s Most Haunted Venue

York Otherworld Old HouseOtherworld – York’s Most Haunted Venue

Enter the realms of the Otherworld if you dare: be forever trapped within the warren of rooms that exist in the gaunt building, with its oppressive atmosphere and dank corridors that transport you through time from the murkily medieval 1400s, to the ghastly Georgians and gloomy Victorians through a thousand years of murder, chilling intrigue and grisly skullduggery, the likes of which you’ve never seen or heard before…

You may see its most famous ghost - Tom, a tall man attired in black, who wields a knotted leather cord between his hands lingering in the Seance Room on the second floor; or the balding monk who inhabits the Lantern room, or catch sight of the Georgian lady who graces the dining room or maybe witness some of the manifestations of poltergeist activity that often takes place.

But you might find something even more scary lurking in the interior of this ancient house on Stonegate, for Otherworld is the home of Fright Nights – The Original Ghost Hunting Company established in 1999 who were the first business of its kind to offer overnight ghost hunting experiences, for those courageous enough to venture into the inner sanctums of the UK’s scariest venues like, for starters… the former Asylum in Lincoln or the Vaults in Edinburgh.

Now in their tenth year, Fright Night operates at over 170 of the UK’s most haunted venues and has access to exclusive locations during times when most people don’t get to see them.
They’re also pretty active in the fleshly world too and have raised an inordinate amount of money for charity over the years: in 2003 they organised the World’s Biggest Ghost Hunt broadcast to four million viewers on Living TV in aid of cancer charities.

In 2007, Fright Night organised another supernatural event at Alton Towers when over 880 people took part in a psychic experiment.

Every month, in fact, Fright Night takes more than 1,000 ghost hunters on the most thrilling tours available.

York Otherworld Old StonegateFor private events they have enlisted the help of a team of top paranormal investigators including David Wells, Ian Lawman and Dr Ciaran O’Keeffe, and two experienced mediums are present to control and channel any paranormal activity that may take place – these are Philip Solomon, a Spiritualist Medium who has been in the business for over 30 years, described as the leading trance medium of our time, and Roy Roberts from Kent who has worked in some of Britain’s most haunted locations.
Any one venturing out on one of Fright Night’s excursions is in the safest possible hands – although they also may feel the icy touch of a ghostly finger too, who knows.

And it’s not only seasoned ghost hunters that go on Fright Night’s excursions, as many sceptics who have been on the ghostly jaunts seem to thoroughly enjoy the experience too.
Karyn Johnson, who spent a disturbed Fright Night at Warwick Castle, admits that: “The events of that night certainly made me open-minded about the fact that there are a lot of things in this world that defy explanation.”
Kristen Lackajis of Warwick sounds a note of trepidation however: “If you are weak of heart or fearful of those who do not sleep, I would suggest a visit during the daytime and just make sure that you leave before the night begins to fall,” she advises.

Other people just can’t get enough however – they simply arrange their holidays around the events!

Fright Night events range from jolly-sounding evening soirees with suppers, paranormal activities and mini ghost tours to full-on Ghost Hunts. The latter may require nerves of steel to witness what roams at the dead of night at some of the world’s most haunted locations. But be not afraid – overnight investigations always include psychic mediums and expert paranormal investigators.

The FrightenersWhy not make a weekend of it (Hotel California perhaps?)?

Fright Night’s famous haunted weekends take place at locations that crawl with paranormal activity, but you won’t simply be waiting for things that go bump in the night – you’ll also have an opportunity to flex your psychic abilities and dig deep into the world of ghosts and haunting.

But – hey, life’s too short to muck about – why not just go the whole hog and attend a Ghost Festival packed with spine-tingling activities, ghost hunting vigils, tarot card readers, clairvoyants, talks by paranormal experts and psychic fairs with ghostly stories that take place – guess where – in the most haunted buildings of Britain?

Celebrations and parties including birthdays, Stag Nights, Hen Nights, anniversaries or just a friends’ night out can be turned into hair-raising events. It’s guaranteed that this will be the one night that everybody remembers for the rest of their lives!
Take part in experiments, seances or use some of the hi-tech ghost busting equipment used by the experts. Just call the Events team and they will be able to arrange a Fright Night in suggested locations across the UK tailored to suit any group or budget.

Venues include the haunted castles and mansions, Bodmin Gaol in Cornwall, prisons and asylums – Fright Nights are there to cater to your every whim whether you want a ghost tour, a full course meal or buffet, a sleepover or a private paranormal investigation. The company simply require a booking of over 20 people for private group bookings – but they may not all return…

Fright Nights have received ecstatic reviews from the grave in the media – dare I say – raves from the grave?
Perhaps the most telling is from poor Simon Cartwright of BBC Gloucestershire who attended a Fright Night in 2005, whose trembling verdict was

“The event certainly lived up to its name…”
