This audio tour, which customers download to their iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry, MP3 Player or mobile phone has been rated as excellent by those staff at Visit York, the city’s official tourism board, who have undertaken the tour.

Listeners then receive instructions on a separate track informing them how to reach their next commentary point. The narrator of the tour, Jonathan Keeble, will ask listeners to press PAUSE while they walk from one point to the next and then press PLAY when they arrive there.  In addition, customers receive a free downloadable map to help them navigate from A to B.

Should the heavens open, simply pause your audio tour, and then resume it later, when the weather has improved. With the Walk Talk Tour of York there is no timetable to adhere to, or hidden charges to contend with.

The city of York, which was founded by the Romans back in 71AD, lies half way between Edinburgh and London.  Listeners to the Walk Talk Tour audio guide of York can hear about the city’s rich history on their own terms, and at their own pace.

Begin in St Helen’s Square, close to porta praetoria, the south-west entrance to York’s Roman Fortress.

Hear about ghostly goings on at the King’s Manor; learn about confectionery empires built in the city, hear about Clifford Tower‘s dark history and where a famous highwayman spent his final days.  And enjoy a walk along the Shambles, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval streets, which has several interesting tales to tell.
