For the many visitors to the city of York, a trip to one of the art galleries  there is a great way of completing the tourist trail as the pieces on offer are a wonderfully eclectic mix made up from paintings and sculptures, of vibrant colours and of soft pastels. The York Art Gallery is open to all and has many exhibits that are sure to capture the imagination of everyone that visits. On top of the wonderful displays there are special events available all year round where children and adults alike can join in to make their own works of art.

York Art Gallery is also renowned for its special exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and textiles from across the globe, with some coming from as far afield as Japan.

The gallery also boasts a shop full of postcards, books and souvenirs. There is also a cafe at the gallery where you can sit in the beautiful Exhibition Square and take in the view of the city of York, with the inspiring backdrop of the cathedral.

By public transport: the gallery is a short ten minute walk from both the bus and train stations. From the railway station turn left onto Station Road and keep walking until it merges with Museum Street. On Museum Street continue in the same direction as you have been walking until you reach St. Leonards Place, here turn left and continue until you see the Exhibition Square on your left.

By bus: come out of the station and walk down Rougier Street to Station Road where you turn right and continue to walk as Station Road turns into Museum Street. When you come to St. Leonards Place, turn left and continue until you see Exhibition Square on your left.

ArtSpace York


The York ArtSpace is an amazing contemporary art gallery complete with studio space for budding artists to get involved and make their own artful masterpiece.

The venue boasts a fully featured area for York- and Yorkshire- based contemporary artists. Many of the city of York’s contemporary artists have found acclaim from having their art showcased at the York ArtSpace, even when their work is on hard-hitting themes.

If you have any interest in art, you are sure to enjoy an afternoon at the ArtSpace in York.

Visiting the York ArtSpace


By bus: walk out of the bus station and down Rougier Street turning left onto Micklegate, walk up Micklegate as it merges into Bridge Street/Lower Ouse Gate which takes you over the River Ouse. Once over the river, take your first right onto Castlegate. At the end of Castlegate, turn right onto Tower Street.
