York University

 
York University is located in the city of York, England. The main campus at Heslington is situated on 200 acres of parkland, well known for its lake and wildfowl.

York University is known as one of the best universities in the country, and is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network, supporting a very high level of education. The University of York has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize three times; the first was in 1997 for the work of the Department of Computer Science, the second in 2005 for the work of the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP), and the third award was received in 2007 for the work of  the Centre for Health Economics (CHE).

York University has around 11,000 students, more than 30 academic departments, eight colleges and number of research centres. The eight University Colleges represented by Alcuin, Derwent, Goodricke, Halifax, James, Langwith, Vanbrugh and Wentwoth, are completely individual communities.

The University of York was established in 1963, admitting about 200 students and based in three buildings, including King’s Manor in the city centre and historic Heslington Hall in the village of Heslington, on the edge of York. A year later the Heslington Campus was built, which now forms the main part of the university.

King’s Manor building holds the Archaelogy Studies, Medieval Studies and Eighteenth Century Studies departments. It is also used for art displays and has a public restaurant

800px-university-of-york_heslington-hallHeslington Hall was designed by architect Andrew Derbyshire and it holds many of York University’s administration departments. A major landmark is the building’s Central Hall, which is used for examinations, as well as theatrical and musical performances. The campus is set around a central lake, which is the largest plastic-bottomed lake in Europe. There is a large population of wild and semi-wild waterfowl, including ducks, black swans, great crested grebes, and a large population of rabbits.

Heslington campus is also utilised for many sporting facilities, including jogging trails, an athletic union, playing fields and pitches, and a sports centre. The sports centre includes tennis, badminton and squash courts.

York University runs approximately a hundred student societies, such as newspaper publications, a radio station, a television station, music societies and political parties.

The oldest student newspaper “Nouse” was established in 1964, and in 2005 was named NUS/Mirror Student paper of the year. “Vision”, another student newspaper, was named Guardian Student Newspaper of the Year and also won Best Small Budget Publication at the NUS/Mirror National Student Media Awards in 2006.

york-university-groundsThe student radio station University Radio York is the oldest independent radio station in the country, and won the Student Radio Awards Best Station Award in 2005.

Since 1999 The University of York Filmmaking Society have made two feature films and many shorts, some of which have been shown at a national film festivals 

The University of York Drama Society is one of the largest student societies, as well as the University Music Society.

York University is ranked 6th out of 172 Higher Education Centres for research, and is one of the universities with the highest scores in official teaching assessments.
