Days Out in York: The York Dungeon

York Dungeon is one of the biggest tourist attractions in York today.

The dungeon attraction is a show using actors, special effects and other displays’ depicting the gruesome and horrible past of the city of York in an interesting and entertaining way.

The York Dungeon opened its doors to the public in 1986 and is owned by Merlin Entertainments. The dungeon was the second of its kind opened in England, with the other being the London Dungeon.

The shows are around one to one-and-a-half hours in length. In a show about the Great Plague of 1551, you will see the gruesome results that the plague brought to York. Ghost stories are also told from a recreation of an old York public house called the Golden Fleece Inn.

Other parts of the dungeon show include an old courtroom, torture chambers, Viking history and stories from Dick Turpin’s executioner.

Overall, the York Dungeon is a fun, enjoyable, if a little gruesome, day out for the family and is certainly a show that everyone will remember for some time to come.
